‑ GEORGE W. ZELLER ‑ George Zeller was born in Pennsylvania in 1833 and was of German descent. He married Sarah Kleinhans. George was a truck gardener in Easton, Pennsylvania. He maintained a stall in the market and every morning took fresh fruits and vegetables to the market for sale. In 1879 the Zellers moved to Kansas and settled in the Sedalia community. George found the weather in Kansas a bit different from that in the Delaware River Valley. Finally the cold winters and hot, dry summers were too much for George, and he moved his family back to Pennsylvania in 1888, leaving his son Harvey to farm the homestead. Several of the Zeller children later returned to Sedalia. The Zeller family was extremely musically talented. They often performed at community events and at church services.10 ‑ HENRY D. GRAVES – Henry Graves was born in Guilford, Vermont in 1836. He married at age seventeen and worked in a harness shop. In 1854, he joined other New Englanders in coming to Kansas to help fight in the border wars. He stayed a year and returned to his wife and daughter. Immediately after the battle of Bull Run he joined the army. Shortly upon his discharge, his wife died and he placed the daughter with a family to raise as their own. Henry returned to Kansas and settled in the Sedalia community farming 120 acres. Henry married a second time but she died several years later. Henry married a third time and they had a daughter. This wife died six years later. He married a fourth time to a Swedish immigrant and raised six children. In 1897 Henry moved to Oklahoma.11 ‑ FREDERICK M. BLYTHE - Frederick was born in Scotland in 1834. He served his apprenticeship as an engineer in Glasgow, Scotland, afterward going to England and sailing from Liverpool as an engineer on a ship cruising the Mediterranean. He was then sent to Brazil for three years, sailing from Bahai along the coast handling coffee and other tropical products. He was given a citation by the Bahai Imperial Brazilian Navy in 1867 for his engineering work in founding the harbor at Bahai, Brazil.12 Blythe was married in 1859 in Scotland and considered moving his family to Brazil. But after spending some time in Brazil, he decided to immigrate to the United States. He brought his wife and children to the U.S. in 1869. They came by way of Ellis |
